JAY-JAY JOHANSON "TRAVELLING LIGHT 1996-2000"

I've been on the road, I've been on vacation
I've been traveling light to reach my final destination
Now I'm coming home

So tell the girls that I am back in town, you'd better tell them to beware
Where they may go or they might try to hide, I follow on and I'll be there

So tell the girls that I am back in town, and if it's true I do not know
That every girl around had missed me since I decided to go

I could be your friend, I could be your stranger
I could be the one your mother said would be your danger
Now it's up to you

So tell the girls that I am back in town, you'd better tell them to beware
Where they may go or they might try to hide, I follow on and I'll be there

So tell the girls that I am back in town and if it's true I do not know
That every girl around had missed me since I decided to go

[excerpt from the lyrics of "So Tell the Girls That I'm Back in Town" by Jay-Jay Johanson, 1996]

Jay-Jay Johanson is one of my heroes. Yes, no less than that. So, what can I add? I remember the very first time I watched the promotional clip for his first single "It Hurts Me So" back in 1996: what a coloured and strong voice in such a pale and frail body!

The lyrics and general atmosphere of the song have instantly entrapped me in melancholy and I never recovered since then... No, seriously, I have thought about it many times and now I would like to publicly state that, in this life, Jay-Jay Johanson is the only worthy artist that I discovered stumbling by chance upon MTV at 3:00 a.m., really! Since then I enjoyed each and every album he has made and I never get tired of listening to them.

A few years ago, in the early days of the blog, I already dedicated a few posts to Jay-Jay and you can find them here. The collection of edits, remixes, live recordings, rare tracks, etc. that I'm delighted to feature in this post covers the years 1996-2000 or, if you prefer, his first three albums, namely "Whiskey", "Tattoo" and "Poison". Each of these releases is a trip hop M-A-S-T-E-R-P-I-E-C-E that can easily stand between Portishead's first two albums without being ashamed.

Jay-Jay Johanson at home in Stockholm, 1997

In his twenty-year career, Jay-Jay Johanson has released ten albums and is currently working on his eleventh full-lenght release that will be released sometimes in mid/late 2017. His latest available offering is entitled "Opium" and was released in 2015 on Kwaidan Records. Needless to say that it is another fine example of his great art and I strongly encourage you to check it out, you won't regret it.

The following review of "Opium" was written by French journalist Pierre Siankowski; it fairly summarize Jay-Jay's distinctive features and was used as the album's official press-release:

«It was in 1996 that Jay-Jay Johanson, a young man from a cold climate, fascinated by the Bristol sound they called trip-hop and Portishead in particular, first tapped delicately on our eardrums. The intoxicating album that definitively put this rare and elegant Swede on the map was called "Whiskey". It was the beginning of an enthralling adventure. In only a few songs he revealed a family tree that spread its roots far and wide: on one branch Lee Hazlewood, or pop from Talk Talk or Harry Nilsson, on the other John Coltrane with Johnny Hartman, and a whole army of calm jazz or symphonic recordings sampled from everywhere imaginable. Almost twenty years later he has returned with an incredible new album. This new release is called "Opium" and it contains the very essence of Johanson's music: an ease with inventing melodies, a voice that gently caresses, and the jacked up, heady rhythms that lift and carry the songs. From the peaceful harmonica opening of "Drowsy / Too Young To Say Good Night" to the smoke-wreathed love song "I Don't Know Much About Loving", via titles with a sporadic and light groove ("NDE", "Alone Too Long"), "Opium" is a courageous offering. Johanson opens his heart with fearlessness and modesty, gracefully lowering his guard and evoking the questions that torment men of his age: love, solitude, immaturity. The songwriting is unerring, the words have a suppressed poetry. This new Johanson is the work of a guy who has survived the avalanches, who is no longer looking for answers and is content to sketch out the perspectives in as many songs. Some titles are serious ("Harakiri"), but others immediately take up the reins casting a more gentle, peaceful light, like "Scarecrow," a collaboration with Robin Guthrie that would not have sounded out of place on a Cocteau Twins album, or of the strange positivity of "Be Yourself" or "I Love Him So". The strength of "Opium" is that it asks questions that don't necessarily have an answer; it offers a collection of songs freed from any certitude but which convince through their modesty, through their precision. In short, Jay-Jay at his best.»

CHARLOTTE'S BIONIC BLIMP "DEMO 97-98"

Charlotte's Bionic Blimp was a band created by Colette and Jason Savall in the late '90s. On a certain level the project also involved Jordan Tarlow, and it's worth mentioning that both Tarlow and Savall were ex-members of the mighty Garage-Rock band The Fuzztones.

Their first - and only - single was released in September 1998 by Sheep Records in Switzerland; this release has been the subject of a previous post here on Stereo Candies.

For some reason they shortened their name to Bionic Blimp and in 1999 they debuted on CD with "Exploring Automatic Rhythms", released on their own imprint TGTBT Music. This release seems to be quite rare and I wasn't able to find a single copy available for sale on the Internet.

It seems that the band lasted at least until 2001, and they often played live concerts in the Los Angeles area with an extended lineup that included a bassist and a drummer. During their short lifetime they were often compared to the B-52's, the Sparks, The Cars and Stereolab.

On offer in this post is a demotape recorded circa in 1997-98 which used to be available on ScrapeFlutter.com. Since the original files were deleted, I though about offering them here. Three of the four tracks included on the demo were later re-recorded and included on "Exploring Automatic Rhythms", I truly hope that someday I will be able to listen to them...

Here's the track list for this release:

extra tracks

05. 1999 (3:01)
06. Here We Go Again (2:41)

All tracks were remastered in November 2013, they are available in FLAC lossless format along with printable artwork. Please have a look at the comments for the download link.

THE SHEEP RECORDS STORY #10: THE ONYAS "ALLAN MURRAY" (1998)

Sheep Records was a Swiss underground label specialized in Garage-Rock, Surf, Lounge and other Rock'n'Roll oddities. Run by Christian Müller from Zürich, along with friends Andi Frick and Andreas Egi, it was active from 1996 to 2004 and published about 30 releases, mostly on 7" vinyl singles.

In october 2006, after about two years of hiatus, all the contents of the now defunct Sheep Records website were deleted from the Internet, and replaced with a blank page announcing that "Der Kebab ist gegessen" ("The kebab is eaten"), a last goodbye and a reference to the label's cataloguing system that included the prefix "kebab" for vinyl releases and "gigot" for CD releases.

The tenth Sheep Records release was a 7" single by punk-rockers The Onyas from Brisbane, Australia. The single was released in September 1998 to celebrate the band's European tour; it was limited to 300 copies on transparent vinyl and 700 copies on black vinyl, for a total of 1.000 copies. It came in a nice artwork designed by Mike Keane.

The Onyas were formed in 1991 by guitarist John "Mad Macka" McKeering, bassist Richard "Rich" Stanley and drummer Jordan "Jaws" Stanley; their debut single entitled "Beergut" was released in 1994 by Au-go-go in Australia. Between 1997 and 1999 the band released two albums, "Get Shitfaced With The Onyas" and "Six!", and a compilation with re-recorded tracks from their singles entitled "Heterospective".

It is unclear to me if nowadays the band still exists or not: there's hasn't been any new The Onyas release since a dozen of years, but videos of recent live activities are available on YouTube... Anyway, Johh McKeering has joined Cosmic Psychos in 2006, after the death of Robbie Watts, and has also released a 7" single in 2012; Jordan Stanley is also part of The Casanovas.

Here's the track list for this release:

01. Allan Murray (2:45)
02. Blankety Blank (1:11)
03. Problems (3:56)

All tracks were remastered from vinyl in March 2013 and are available in FLAC lossless format or high-quality 320 Kbps MP3 files, both formats include scans of the original item in PDF format. Please have a look at the comments for the download links.

The EP features two original tracks and a cover of the Sex Pistols' "Problems"; here's the credits as they appear on the back cover:

Our songs recorded July 98 at Riverbed in Capalaba, the arsehole of Southeast Queensland. The Pistols number from May at The Lode II.

Front cover by Mike Keane.

EEG of Richard's brainwaves by Dr. John Cameron.

Bert Cocaine - Drums
Dozin'Ozin - Bass
Ganja Dingaling - Guitar & Chicillo '98

Given away to anyone who turned up at Reitschule in Bern and at the Luv Club in Zurich: Onyas + Cosmic Psychos, Sept. 98.

....if we don't get there, pick us up a copy!

THE SHEEP RECORDS STORY #9: CHARLOTTE'S BIONIC BLIMP "1999 / HERE WE GO AGAIN" (1998)

The ninth Sheep Records release was the one and only official 7" by Charlotte's Bionic Blimp, a side-project created by Colette and Jason Savall and co-produced by Jordan Tarlow. Both Tarlow and Savall are ex-members of the mighty Garage-Rock band The Fuzztones.

The single was released in September 1998, it was limited to 300 copies on purple transparent vinyl and 700 copies on black vinyl, for a total of 1.000 copies. It came in a nice artwork designed by David Burns.

Here's the optimistic Sheep original short press-release:

"Potentially the 1st chart breaker for Sheep! Charlotte's Bionic Blimp (featuring Jason Savall of the Fuzztones) from L.A. perform a New Wave influenced version of the Prince classic '1999'. 'Here We Go Again' on the flip is a beautiful pop song with a lovely female chorus. This might be their only release before getting very big."

It seems that the band lasted at least until 2001, and they often played live concerts in the Los Angeles area with an extended lineup that included a bassist and a drummer. During their short lifetime they were often compared to the B-52's, the Sparks, The Cars and Stereolab.

They shortened their name to Bionic Blimp and in 1999 they debuted on CD with "Exploring Automatic Rhythms", released on their own imprint TGTBT Music. This release seems to be quite rare and I wasn't able to find a single copy available for sale on the Internet; rest assured that the search will go on and you'll be notified if I'm successful...

Here's the track list for this 7" single:

01. 1999 (3:01)
02. Here We Go Again (2:41)

Both tracks were remastered from vinyl in January 2013 and are available in FLAC lossless format or high-quality 320 Kbps MP3 files, both formats include scans of the original item in PDF format. Please have a look at the comments for the download links.

THE SHEEP RECORDS STORY #8: THE LOU HÖFFNER TRIO MINUS ONE "MOOG WALK" (1998)

The eight Sheep Records release was a 7" by the mysterious Lou Höffner Trio Minus One; it is rumoured that this project was conducted by the brother of one of the members of Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited...

The single was released in September 1998, it was limited to 200 copies on black vinyl and 300 copies on translucent green vinyl, for a total of 500 copies. It came in a stunning artwork created by famous painter and illustrator Shag.

Side A features a Moog cavalcade sustained by a steady rhythm section; all parts are played on the Moog - except for the drums and bass - and all the capabilities of the instrument are explored for good. Side B also features a guitar as solo instrument and is another fine example of sci-fi bleeps, swooshes and swells.

Here's the track list for this 7" single:

01. Moog Walk (4:28)
02. Morse Jerk (2:50)

Both tracks were remastered from vinyl in November 2012 and are available in FLAC lossless format or high-quality 320 Kbps MP3 files, both formats include scans of the original item in PDF format. Please have a look at the comments for the download links.

THE SHEEP RECORDS STORY #7: THE MEN FROM S.P.E.C.T.R.E. "REVENGE OF THE BLIND MAN" (1998)

The seventh Sheep Records release was the debut EP by The Men From S.P.E.C.T.R.E. This 7" contains four tracks and is limited to 700 copies on green vinyl; it was released in April 1998.

On offer here on most tracks are an adrenalinic fuzz guitar and a persistent organ backed with a solid bass/drum rhythm section. "From Las Vegas With Love" is stuffed with an unsettling radio message, while the quieter "Le Vaccum" alternates lounge moments and acid riffs; in my opinion these are the best cuts.

Here's the track list and the personnel/credits list for this 7" single as they appear on the back cover:

01. Revenge of the Blind Man (2:30)
02. From Las Vegas With Love (2:22)
03. Le Vacuum (3:23)
04. Miniskirt (3:17)

Guitar: Gerry Germann
Bass: Rolf Keller
Organ: Mario Janser
Drums: Stefan Saurer

All songs written by The Men From S.P.E.C.T.R.E.

Cover by Rolf Keller

Recorded in 1998 at Spooky Sound

04.09.2015 Update: sorry guys, I recently received a DMCA complaint concerning another post I dedicated to The Men From S.P.E.C.T.R.E., download links are not available anymore...

The Men from S.P.E.C.T.R.E. have released three albums, the rest of their output on Sheep Records will be the subject of further posts in the future. Here's the group official biography as it appears on their own website:

The Men from S.P.E.C.T.R.E. (Winterthur, Switzerland) rush out of the speakers, straight through your living room, into your ears and move your pulse. The sound is fit for street races with perfectly tuned cars and at home in NASA promotional films. The rough edges and instrumental action sound echoes the space-rock-bands and soundtracks of the 70s. The catchy beat of Drums, Congas and Bass join the wild Hammond organ and fuzzy Guitar to mash-up the scenes.

"The Living Eye" is the third record of the S.P.E.C.T.R.E.'s and released on American label Hammondbeat Records. "The Living Eye" is more indulgent, more psychedelic, and hits the beat harder than the previous records. The songs "Purple Pill People" and "Black Tank", along with earlier productions, have been released on internationally revered labels like Acid Jazz Records (UK).

The Men from S.P.E.C.T.R.E. have toured Italy, Spain, UK, Germany, Belgium, France, and Switzerland. The Swiss quintet will be on stage with "The Living Eye" ...heading for lots of trouble.
